A 13-year-old Zimbabwean girl has been raped while trying to cross the Beit Bridge border in Limpopo.
South African police say she was walking with her mother who has a passport. The mother advised her to go under the bridge, where she could jump the fence with other illegal foreign nationals as she did not have proper documentation.
While walking under the bridge, they were allegedly confronted by members of a crime syndicate known as Maguma-guma. One of the men allegedly raped her before he disappeared into the bush. The girl is in hospital while the suspect is still on the run.
Meanwhile, a memorandum pleading for action to be taken against rape, was handed to the Police, Justice and Social Development departments after a rally in Cape Town. Cosatu, alongside community organisations, held the anti-rape and abuse rally in the Mother City.
One of the speakers, Frieda Oosthuizen, has called on men and women to fight the scourge together.
Oosthuizen says decisive action is needed to honour those who have been raped and murdered like 17-year old Bredasdorp girl, Anene Booysen.
