A Zhombe has been picked up by police in connection with suspected arson that left three people dead, among them two kids aged two and five years.

Edson Mashoko is alleged to have set his in-laws' hut in Zhombe's Mutandi village on fire after a misunderstanding with his wife. A family dispute turned into tragedy when Mashoko followed his wife Dorica Dube to her parents' home where she had gone to seek refuge after a misunderstanding with her husband.

On Sunday the 10th of this month, Mashoko is suspected to have doused his in-laws' hut with petrol before setting it on fire.

Sleeping in the hut were Mashoko's wife; sister in-law, Petronella, his two year old son, Talent; his mother-in-law, Mrs Lucia Mwanza and three other children. Two children, Ali Mususa (5) and Mashoko's son Talent (2) were burnt beyond recognition.

The mother-in-law, Mrs Mwanza who had been transferred to Harare Central Hospital died on Tuesday due to the burns. Mashoko's wife and her sister, Petronella are still at Harare Central Hospital after being transferred from Gokwe General Hospital.

The family was struggling to raise money for transport to ferry the body back to Zhombe for burial.

After learning about the family's plight, members from Zanu PF Harare Central District and the party leadership from Zhombe provided transport to ferry the body and some accompanying relatives to Zhombe as well as money to cater for the funeral expenses.
