A cleansing ceremony by a self-styled witch hunter from Mashonaland popularly known in Zimbabwe as Tsikamutanda turned horribly wrong at a homestead in Mangwe District, Plumtree when the witch hunter was seriously burnt by a suspected goblin he was trying to get rid of.
It is alleged that the prophet who was seriously burnt on the private parts, right hand and stomach was taken to a district hospital where he was treated and discharged. The near tragic incident which is still the talk of Smithbok Village happened last week.
The cleansing ceremony was reportedly being conducted by a family that claimed the goblin in question was causing mysterious deaths within their family. The prophet was only identified as prophet Shambira.
Sources who spoke to our news crew said prophet Shambira was invited by one of the villagers to cleanse his homestead.
"On the near fateful night, prophet Shambira called villagers to gather around a bonfire at the homestead in question before he instructed them to sing. In the process, Prophet Shambira who immediately went into a trance, after being possessed by the spirit which seemed to help him in his work, rushed into the bedroom hut where he claimed the goblin was hiding. he soon came out and stood at the door saying he had managed to get hold of the goblin and wanted to burn it.
"All hell broke loose when he started trembling holding the suspected mysterious creature which he tried to throw into the fire. The goblin overpowered him and Shambira fell into the fire with his privates being the first part of his body to get burnt," said the source who requested not to be named.
The tsikamutanda was later rescued by some members of his crew who braved the menacing flames when they dragged him to safety. Shambira who appeared not to accept defeat, after the horrendous battle, is alleged to have told his followers that the creature caught him off guard and vowed that the struggle would continue unabated.
"Although he was writhing in agony, Shambira vowed that he was going to assist the family by removing the much dreaded creature that was terrorising them. Currently no one knows where he is but he only said he will be 'having a journey' in a bid to get his wounds nursed," said the source.
