Gwanda heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have left a trail of destruction at Johnsly Resettlement in the West Nicholson area amid calls for various stakeholders to assist the affected community.
Speaking after touring the affected homes, the Governor and Resident Minister for Matabeleland South Province, Angeline Masuku implored local authorities to construct houses in rural areas that can withstand adverse weather conditions.
She also appealed to non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to assist villagers in the refurbishment of four dams that were destroyed by the hailstorm.
Councillor for Ward 23, Mrs Fiola Gumbo, appealed to the government to assist affected families processing national identity documents destroyed by the rain ahead of the referendum.
Meanwhile, the governor handed over clothing and blankets donated by Red Cross Zimbabwe to benefit the 26 affected households.
