A Beitbridge-based cross-border driver was killed while two others were seriously injured when a 1 tonne truck they were travelling in side-swiped with a haulage truck on Friday afternoon on the New Limpopo Bridge which links Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The incident occurred at around 4.30 pm.

It is understood that the overloaded 1 tonne truck was travelling from the South African side of the border into Zimbabwe.

The driver tried to overtake a slow moving vehicle but hit the haulage truck which was travelling in the opposite direction.

He lost control, resulting in the two vehicles side-swiping each other injuring all the occupants of the small truck.

The driver suffered serious body injuries and was ferried to Musina Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

The other two passengers were also taken to the same hospital where their condition was reported to be stable.

The police officer commanding Beitbridge district Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo said investigations into the matter were still in progress.

He, however, could not release the dead driver's name as his next of kin were yet to be informed.

The incident comes a few months after a Zambian woman was fatally knocked down by a speeding bus at the same spot.
