A Nkayi man, 32, is on the run after he allegedly fatally stabbed his ex-wife for refusing to shake hands and bid him farewell.

The man, identified as Soni Ndlovu reportedly stabbed twice his ex-wife with an unidentified object on the leg and neck, killing her instantly.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said the incident happened last week at Nesigwe Village under Chief Madliwa.

"Ms Portia Nkomo was called from Bulawayo by her relatives on Saturday at Milton Nkomo's homestead to resolve the matter between her and her ex-husband, Soni Ndlovu, but nothing materialised as Ms Nkomo refused to reunite with Ndlovu," said Insp Dube.

He said at about 7pm, Nkomo went to Nesigwe Business Centre to board a bus to Bulawayo in the company of Lontia Chimedza and Ndlovu followed her.

"The accused followed Ms Nkomo to the bus stop and asked her to shake hands with him as a way of bidding him farewell, but she refused. This did not go down well with Ndlovu who held her hand and stabbed her on the leg with an unidentified object. She tried to escape but failed as she was in pain. Ndlovu stabbed her again on the neck and she fell on the ground and died on the spot," said Insp Dube.

He said a report was made to the police in Nkayi who attended the scene.

"The accused is still at large and we are appealing to the locals to notify the police if they have any information that could lead to his arrest," said Insp Dube.
