The Zimbabwe Republic Police has recovered 140 stolen donkeys in Tsholotsho since the launch of an operation code-named, "Izifuyo Ngezikabani?" on the 25th of last month.

Out of the 140 stolen donkeys recovered from Mbamba, Mbalibali and Gutshani Villages in the district, 76 have so far been identified by their owners.

ZRP Officer in Charge in Tsholotsho, Chief Inspector Archibald Mpofu said the donkeys were stolen through a syndicate, adding that five people have been arrested so far including one man who was already on the wanted list for stock theft in Nyamandlovu.

When the News crew arrived at the ZRP Charge office in the district, it was a hive of activity as villagers jostled to identify and recover their stolen donkeys.

The villagers commended the initiative taken by the police and called on others to co-operate law enforcement agents and supply information which will assist them.

It is believed that the suspects have been responsible for cases of poaching and were hiring out the donkeys for as much as R3000 during the ploughing season.

Some reports also say the suspects transported game meat using donkeys to various destinations.

One man has been sentenced to nine years in prison, while another is awaiting final judgement on his case which is expected to be concluded this week.
