THE Gweru City Council has availed a new housing project in Mkoba Village 21 that has 6 900 residential stands, the Mayor, Councillor Tedious Chimombe, has said.

In an interview, Clr Chimombe said the local authority has since started servicing the land for the new suburb.

He said Mkoba Village 21 housing project was meant to benefit city council workers who did not own houses.

"The city continues to grow and we are now servicing stands for a new suburb, Mkoba Village 21. The land has 6 900 residential stands and we are in the process of developing the area," said Clr Chimombe.

He said about 1 000 stands have been reserved for the city council workers.

He said a full council meeting recently resolved that all council employees who did not own houses should benefit under the programme.

"Gweru City Council employs about 1 400 workers and we have resolved as council that about 1 000 stands under the new project be reserved for the council workers. The council will deduct money from their salaries as we seek to have every council employee a home owner," he said.

Clr Chimombe said the new suburb would help reduce the council's housing waiting list which now stands at 17 000.

"The council is still struggling with its housing waiting list which continues to grow year by year. We, however, hope this project will help reduce the housing waiting list backlog. There will be a second phase of residential stands to be developed for the new suburb and our target is to have this first project completed by the end of the year so that people can start constructing their houses," he said.
