A POLICE assistant inspector from Matobo Police Station has been arrested alongside five of his subordinates for allegedly demanding bribes from motorists at a roadblock they manned in the district.
Assistant Inspector Mufandaidza Gawula and Constables Admire Nekati, Raphel Viola, Elias Chapunduku, Sharif Zhou and Emmanuel Gonese were not asked to plead to contravening Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
They are out of custody on their own cognisance and will appear in court today for routine remand and to be advised of their trial date.
Prosecutor Paul Munyaradzi Mpofu told the court that Gawula and his subordinates were last week manning a roadblock in Matobo district near their police station.
Allegations are that Gawula parked his police vehicle some 100 metres from the roadblock which was manned by five of his juniors.
From his spot, Gawula reportedly stopped vehicles and ask for bribes from motorists for them to go through the roadblock without hiccups.
After receiving the bribes he would allegedly give the motorists a pass stamped with a Matobo Police Station date stamp.
Through that modus operandi, Gawula and his juniors are said to have received $30 from three motorists, namely Qiniso Ncube, Josphat Mpofu and Sambulo Nkomo.
The motorists opted to expose the scam and reported the case to police whom they furnished with the stamped passes as exhibits. The passes led to the arrest of the six.
