A Gweru man who assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her when she allegedly failed to pay back $40 that she owed him was yesterday fined $200.

The man, Absenim Robi of 5734 Mkoba Village 19 landed himself in trouble with the law when he went to his wife, Ms Sibonokuhle Sibanda's workplace and assaulted her.

Robi was brought before Gweru Provincial magistrate, Mrs Pathekile Msipa to answer to two counts of assault and domestic violence.

He was convicted on his own plea and fined $200.

The State's case as presented by Ms Chipo Matshe is that on 11 March, Robi visted the complainant at her workplace where she stayed.

Ms Matshe said Robi demanded his $40 that he had given to the complainant in January.

She said the two failed to understand each other resulting in them engaging in a heated argument.

The court heard that Robi then slapped Ms Sibanda several times in the face.

Ms Matshe said Robi also kicked his wife twice on the ribs.

The court heard that while assaulting her, Robi persistently demanded his cash, threatening to kill her if she failed to pay back.

Ms Matshe said the complainant finally managed to run away and reported the matter to the police.

The court heard that on the second count, on 18 March at about 1.45pm along Liwelin Road, Lundi Park, the complainant met Robi while she was going to Anderson Primary School.

Ms Matshe said Robi then tried to shake hands with Ms Sibanda and she refused.

She said Robi then apologised and begged for forgiveness about the previous incident of assault that she had reported to the police.

The court heard that Ms Sibanda remained silent and did not respond.

Ms Matshe said this did not go down well with Robi who again started to demand his money back.

She said the two started to quarrel and Robi became more aggressive.

The court heard that Robi slapped Ms Sibanda, choked her and pulled her hair, threatening to kill her.

The court heard that the complainant cried for help and Mr David Masenda came to her rescue.

Ms Matshe said the complainant reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of Robi.
