A three-year-old Kamativi boy allegedly slipped, fell on top of a knife he was holding and fatally stabbed himself in the process, police have confirmed.
The boy, identified as Bukhali Mukombwe, reportedly sustained a deep cut on the neck and died before he could be taken to hospital.
Confirming the incident yesterday, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said it happened at Siyampolo village under Chief Pashu last week Friday.
"Three-year-old Mukombwe accompanied his mother, Ms Netsai Mukuli, and her friend Ms Lucia Mudimba to the fields for harvesting. The two women, after harvesting, sat under a tree and Mukombwe's mother sent him to collect a towel, slippers and knife from the field they were harvesting from," said Insp Dube.
He said on his way back while running, he was tripped by grass and fell on top of the knife he was carrying.
"Mukombwe fell on top of the knife he was holding and sustained a deep cut on the neck. His mother tried to render him first aid, but his condition deteriorated and he died before he was taken to the hospital," said Insp Dube.
He said a report was made to the police at Kamativi who attended the scene.
"We would like to advise the public to rush children to the hospital at the earliest opportunity in similar incidences so that they get urgent medical attention," said Insp Dube.
