A 10-months-old Beitbridge toddler drowned in a bath tub on Saturday morning when he was left to play with a another six-year-old minor in the house by their family maid.

The maid filled the bath tub with water and was busy washing clothes outside the house when tragedy struck.

The incident occurred at around 10am at house 216 Hill Close in the low density suburbs.

Police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident on Monday, saying no foul play was suspected.

He said the now deceased, Sceane Gray, was left to play in the house along with the six-year-old by the maid, Lindiwe Mashavire.

"While the two were playing, Sceane crawled into the bathroom where he fell into the bath tub filled with water," said Asst Insp Ngwenya.

"He drowned as a result.

The body was later discovered by Mashavire when she went to collect washing powder from the house."

Asst Insp Ngwenya said the matter was reported to the police who conveyed the body to Beitbridge District Hospital for a post-mortem.

"As police, we continue to urge parents and guardians to be on the lookout for their children following an increase in the number of drowning cases in the province," he said.

The incident comes shortly after a 21-months-old baby from Dulibadzimu suburb in Beitbridge drowned when she fell into a water pond while playing in their yard recently.

A number of drowning cases of minors have been reported in various parts of the country in recent days in different situations, with experts blaming the tragedies on recent rains.
