A 31-YEAR-OLD Tsholotsho man allegedly fatally stoned his father in a bid to try and stop him from assaulting his mother.
The man identified as Obriel Ndebele reportedly hit his father with two bricks on the head leaving him unconscious.
Confirming the incident yesterday, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said it happened at Hondola Village under Chief Magama on Tuesday.
"On 9 March at about 11pm, Robert Ndebele (79) and his wife Sharon Ndebele (61) had a misunderstanding, as a result Robert severely assaulted his wife with fists all over the body.
"While fighting, their son Obriel Ndebele intervened to rescue his mother," said Insp Dube.
He said, however, Robert confronted his son for intervening and this resulted in his son picking up two bricks and hitting him.
"Obriel picked up two bricks and hit his father on the head and he fell unconscious after having sustained deep cuts in the head.
"Robert was rushed to Tsholotsho District Hospital where he died on arrival," said Insp Dube.
He said a report was made at Tsholotsho Police Station and the officers attended the scene.
"Robert Ndebele's body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for a post-mortem while Obriel was arrested and is assisting police with investigations," said Insp Dube.
He appealed to members of the public to refrain from using violence as a way of solving disputes.
"All this could have been avoided through dialogue, families should approach the police, religious and traditional leaders for counselling whenever they have problems to avoid unnecessary bloodshed," said Insp Dube.
