THREE men from Plumtree town used counterfeit 100 rand notes to buy beer worth 600 rand from a bar at the border town.
Amos Muzvondiwa, Khethani Ndlovu and Mandla Nare were arrested on Sunday while still at Kondabayakhe Bar in Plumtree town where they bought the "wise waters" using the fake money.
They ran out of luck after alert policemen who were in the bar spotted them.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe confirmed the arrest of the three suspects.
"We have arrested three suspects for fraud after they allegedly used fake money to buy from a bar. The case is still under investigation and the trio will appear in court soon," said Insp Dzirutwe.
Muzvondiwa allegedly went to the bar on 12 December at about 2am where they bought beer using the counterfeit money.
He was arrested and he implicated his alleged accomplices Ndlovu and Nare.
Insp Dzirutwe said police went to arrest the two, but Ndlovu fled upon seeing the police and left his car behind.
He said police discovered another fake 100 rand note in Nare's possession during a search.
The bar owner who was counting his money at that time also discovered that six 100 rand notes had similar serial numbers.
He said when the police started Ndlovu's car, which they wanted to take to the police station, Ndlovu emerged from his hiding place as he thought it had been stolen.
Insp Dzirutwe urged members of the public and the business community to use money detectors and also familiarise themselves with security features.
He also called on businesspeople to be alert when conducting cash transactions especially during the festive season.
"As Christmas and New Year holidays approach, there are chances that we may experience an increase in the use of counterfeit notes. I urge the public to be on the lookout for fake notes to avoid falling victim," said Insp Dzirutwe.
