Gweru City Council has rolled out a housing project that will see it parcel out nearly 7 000 stands in a development expected to go a long way in cutting the city's fast-growing housing waiting list.

The new project will see the establishment of a new suburb, Mkoba 21, and the cheapest stand will cost $2 000, the city's mayor, Clr Tedious Chimombe, revealed last week.

Clr Chimombe added that the new suburb would go a long way in reducing the council's housing waiting list backlog which currently stands at 17 000 applicants.

The Gweru mayor disclosed that a recent full council meeting resolved that council employees who do not own houses should benefit under the programme.

"Gweru City Council employs about 1 400 workers and we have resolved as council that about 1 000 stands under the new project be reserved for the council workers.

"The council will deduct money from the workers' salaries. This is part of our initiative to help our employees become home owners," he said.

Servicing of the Mkoba 21 stands is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
