A FILABUSI businessman and Zanu-PF Matabeleland South Secretary for Disability, Spare Sithole has rolled out a community self-help chicken project in a bid to empower chiefs.
Speaking during the launch of the scheme recently, Sithole said the project was aimed at boosting income for chiefs so that in turn they would be able to effectively discharge their duties.
He donated 200 chicks with feed and medication to Chiefs Sibasa and Ndube and youths in the respective areas.
"I launched this project for the purposes of helping the chiefs boost their income so that they are able to assist their subjects.
"The chiefs should be able to generate income from the project which they can then use to assist the needy such as orphans in their communities," said Sithole.
He said the project would be rolled out to other chiefs and villagers in Insiza South and North in the near future.
"We want this project to spread to all corners of Insiza district," said Sithole.
He said assisting chiefs and their communities should not be left to Government alone.
"This project will help us in a big way in the sense that we will plough back its proceeds to the community" said Chief Ndube.
She said most chiefs had challenges in raising funds for their upkeep and that of underprivileged villagers and the project would go a long away in addressing these challenges.
Chief Sibasa's spokesperson, Mr Mackenzie Moyo said the good thing was that there was a ready market for chickens in Filabusi.
"There are many restaurants and food outlets that have been established in Filabusi that are providing a market for chickens," said Mr Moyo.
He said the project would help them to raise money to meet their urgent needs as communities.
Sithole also donated 140 litres of paint to the Filabusi Zimbabwe Prison Services and 20 metres of wire mesh to the wives of Filabusi police officers who have also ventured into a chicken project.
The donations had a combined value of $3 700.
