A 70-year-old Masvingo man from Chief Mazunguye area has appeared before the court for luring his 13-year-old niece into a room on the pretext that he wanted to give her pocket money but allegedly raped her.

The man was not asked to plead to one count of rape when he appeared before Beitbridge provincial resident magistrate, Ms Gloria Takundwa.

He was remanded in custody to 9 May.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said on 20 April at about 1.30pm, the accused - who works as a truck driver - spotted his niece playing in the yard at her mother's house in Dulibadzimu suburb in Beitbridge.

It is alleged the accused called the girl to a spare bedroom in the house under the semblance of giving her pocket money, the court heard.

The complainant complied and followed the accused to the room where the man closed the door and locked it.

He allegedly then grabbed the girl and held her mouth so that she could not shout for help during which he forcibly undressed her before raping her.

The victim struck the man in the chest with her elbow and he fell down, the court was told.

The girl got a chance and bolted out of the room and alerted her neighbour, who in turn teamed up with members of the public and they apprehended the man.

The accused was handed over to the police leading to his arrest.
