On April 30, 2013, people in Jotsholo, 30 km from Lupane along Hwange in Matebeleland North province vowed to put ZAPU in government coming elections later this year. In the 1980s when fifth brigade was unleashed to massacre thousands of people in Matebeleland and Midlands's areas, people in Matebeleland north province remained resolute to be ZAPU.
Their concern was solely to hear ZAPU president Dr. Dumiso Dabegwa tell them the way forward. At a rally attended by over 500 people, Dr. Dabengwa assured ZAPU supporter that there is no reverse on the land issue. "Those people who were resettled will not be moved from their newly acquired land because everybody in the country participated in the struggle against the white settlers. Boys and girls provided the information about the whereabouts of the Rhodesian soldiers to the freedom fighters, women prepared food for them and man provided guidance", said Dr. Dabengwa.
"When the country is free an enquiry will be made into how people were allocated land as proper farming will be required and farmers will be assisted in the new government. Zimbabwe did not buy maize from other countries", said Dr Dabengwa followed by a resounding affirmation from the crowd.
"ZAPU is prepared to work with parties who think alike and must consider the issues to do with devolution of power and human rights. Talks are going on about forming a united front, but nothing has been agreed upon yet. When ZAPU pulled out of Zanu PF it mentioned that doors were open for who ever is will to be with it as long as they adhere to the party's principles", ZAPU president went on.
"In the upcoming elections ZAPU will fight to be in government or become a part of a coalition in government and if all that is not possible, it will become a biggest opposition party, the country has ever experienced. When ZAPU gets into power people in the country will determine what infrastructure to put in their areas of responsibility and not people from elsewhere deciding for them." said Dr Dabegwa.
In closing his address Dr. Dabegwa said people must choose their leaders and must not let those who are power choose leaders for them.
Also at the gathering were senior member of the National People's Council, Alternate Secretary General Dr. Strike Mkandla who introduced Dr. Dabegwa's entourage to the people and ZAPU's elections officer retired Colonel Khutshwekhaya Nketa who edged people in Tshojolo to go and register to vote in their large numbers. "Go and check if you name appears in the voters roll so that on the day of elections you are not caught unaware. If you have changed place of stay go a have you name put where you would want to cast your vote from as this year's elections will be in wards".
ZAPU supporters showed their unwavering support for the party by bringing in food and water on donkey drawn carts to feed the masses at the rally.
