Maid, lover takes off with boss' $3 000

A BULAWAYO woman who was employed as a maid in Botswana was arrested after she allegedly stole more than $3 000 from her employer before she teamed up with her boyfriend and returned home to spend the stolen cash.

The boyfriend was also reportedly based in Botswana.

Siphafhisiwe Phiri (27) who reportedly resides in Gwabalanda's spending spree came to a halt on 21 April when she was found by the police "holed" up at her boyfriend Kudakwashe

According to reports, Phiri who was employed as a domestic worker in Botswana by Florida Masheka who is also from Bulawayo betrayed the trust of her employer when she allegedly stole her money during her absence.

It is reported that on 19 March and at Number 40386 Block 5 Gaborone, Phiri was left alone at home by Masheka before she went into her bedroom and ransacked it. She allegedly stole $2 600, P2 000 and R3 000 which was hidden in the wardrobe.

After stealing the money and in a bid to "dodge" arrest Phiri is alleged to have packed her belongings and phoned her boyfriend apparently saying she had struck a "bonanza" and should accompany her back home to spend it.

It is alleged that when she arrived in Zimbabwe, Phiri and her boyfriend embarked on a cash spending spree and their luck ran out when Masheka returned home and reported the matter to the police.

Phiri was arrested at her boyfriend's place of residence following a tip off and upon his arrest only Rl 000 and $45 was recovered.

For the offence she was brought before Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Witness Takunda Mtetwa, charged with theft as defined in section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

She was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 9 May.
