A Form four pupil at St Mary's Secondary School in Beitbridge struck his teacher with a brick seriously injuring him during a scramble for school jerseys on Friday last week.

The school authorities reported the assault case to the police resulting in the pupil being arrested.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesman Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda confirmed the arrest.

He said the incident occurred at around 3pm but said the boy had since been released into the custody of his mother.

On the day in question, said Sgt Sibanda, the juvenile was among other pupils who had queued to collect school jerseys at the administration block.

He said the jerseys were part of the uniforms that are sold at the school.

"The accused was among some school children who were queuing to collect part of the uniforms which they had already paid for. As a result there was commotion in the administration block, resulting in the teacher Mr Mandlenkosi Moyo (42) ordering the pupils to form a proper queue," said Sgt Sibanda.

He said the accused rushed outside refusing to stand in a queue prompting the teacher to follow-up.

Sgt  Sibanda said upon being quizzed about his actions, the teenager picked a brick and hit Mr Moyo on the forehead.

"The boy was later subdued by other school teachers who then reported the matter to the police.

"The complainant was then taken to the hospital where he was treated and discharged," he said.

He said the boy had been charged with assault.
