A 23-year-old Kezi man has been dragged to court for allegations of fatally stabbing a drinking mate with a broken empty beer bottle.
Chrispen Sibanda was arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Witness Mtetwa on charges of murdering 22-year Lungani Nyathi at Venue Cocktail Bar on September 30 last year.
The court heard that at around 3pm on the fateful day, Sibanda was drinking beer with the late Nyathi when a dispute which was not disclosed in court erupted resulting in a fist-fight.
It is alleged the two were eventually restrained by sympathisers. On the same day at about 7pm, Sibanda and Nyathi met again near Thutsha Night Club where a quarrel ensured leading to yet another ugly fight.
Prosecutor Malvern Nzombe told the court that during the scuffle, Sibanda armed himself with a broken empty bottle which he used to gut Nyathi, exposing his intestines.
Nyathi collapsed from excessive bleeding and was quickly ferried to Maphisa Hospital before being transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where he died the following day.
Sibanda was later arrested.
In his warned and cautioned statement, Sibanda admitted having committed the crime but pleaded he had no intention of killing his colleague, adding that he did not realise that he had caused such a serious injury.
