A Midlands State University lecturer allegedly assaulted his wife after a misunderstanding over a toothbrush.

Peter Makaye, a lecturer in the Department of History and Development Studies allegedly assaulted Judith Karimanzira with a wooden plank after she failed to give him a toothbrush when he arrived home from a beer drink.

Makaye, who appeared before Gweru magistrate Phathekile Msipa is, however, denying the charge saying his wife armed herself with stones and a log and "viciously attacked" him accusing him of coming home late. He said he only hit her with the plank in self defence.

It is the State's case that on August 21 2009 at around 11:30pm the accused got home from a beer drink and found the complainant asleep. Makaye allegedly demanded his toothbrush, but complainant failed to locate it.

A misunderstanding ensued resulting in the accused moving out of the house with the complainant following begging him to come back inside. The accused allegedly picked up a wooden plank in the yard and assaulted the complainant once on her back and left arm resulting in her sustaining a broken arm.

But Makaye said his wife, with whom he is on separation, was a person of a violent disposition, who frequently attacked him during their troubled marriage.

He said his wife was making false allegations after the civil court dismissed her maintenance variation application for the upkeep of their son.

"She wanted over $1 000 and when it was dismissed she has been out to get me," he said.

Judgment has been set for June 28.
