A GWERU man employed by a leading fast food outlet committed suicide by drinking poison at his workplace after he was ditched by his girlfriend.

The girlfriend is also employed by the same fast food outlet located at corner 6th Street and Robert Mugabe Way.

It is alleged that Gift Mambo took the poison on Wednesday evening while at his workplace and was immediately rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

Witnesses said Mambo was planning to marry his girlfriend only identified as Privilege who later dumped him for another man.

They said he started persuading his girlfriend, asking her to reconcile with him while threatening to take his life if she refused.

"Privilege who was now hooked with another man refused to reconcile with Mambo despite his threats to kill himself. Mambo who was on night duty later drank poison and collapsed while at work," said the witness.

"He was quickly rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he died upon admission."

Mambo's relative, Mr Moffat Tapera, confirmed the incident yesterday.

He said Mambo was going to be buried in their rural home in Lalapansi today.

"It's true my relative died after drinking poison while at work on Wednesday night. We are processing burial papers at the moment so that we can take his body for burial in Lalapansi tomorrow (today)," said Mr Tapera.

He said the family was not aware why their relative decided to drink poison.

"The reason why he drank poison is not known to us. He did not leave behind a suicide note and to then conclude that he committed suicide after being dumped by a woman like what is being alleged is difficult to say. What I can confirm is that he died after drinking poison and his employers are assisting us with burial arrangements," said Mr Tapera.

Efforts to get a comment from Mambo's employers were fruitless as the management was said to be locked in a series of meetings.

Police spokesperson for Midlands province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said he was not aware of the case since it was not handled by the police.
