A BULAWAYO tout has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a 12-year-old mentally challenged girl.
Thutho Nare (29), of Tshelanyemba village in Kezi, but had been operating as a tout in Cowdray Park on Thursday appeared before Gwanda regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza to answer to charges of rape.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge but was convicted.
On 13 March this year at around 10pm, the complainant was left home in Tshelanyemba with other children while her mother went to attend an all-night birthday party for a relative.
At about 2am, Nare went to the complainant's homestead.
He entered the bedroom hut where the complainant and other children were sleeping.
While inside the hut, Nare went to where the children were sleeping and searched in their blankets until he located the complainant.
He got into the blankets and forcibly had sex with the complainant on an unknown number of times.
After committing the offence, Nare went away leaving behind his sunglasses.
One of the children who was sleeping in the same hut with the complainant informed the adults that there was an intruder who had been to their hut.
As a result, the complainant's mother became suspicious and went on to inspect the complainant after which she observed that she had been raped.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Nare.
Mr Johannes Tlou prosecuted.
