A heavily pregnant Zimbabwean woman collapsed at the Zimbabwe -South Africa border post over the weekend after standing in the queue for hours at the busy Beitbridge Post.

The woman who was later attended to by a South African immigration officer almost gave birth at the border on her way from South Africa to Zimbabwe.

Traffic figures show that the border handles from 8 000 travellers on a normal day to an estimated 20 000 people during peak holiday days.

Many Zimbabwean women prefer buying preparation items for their new-born babies in neighbouring South Africa where baby wear and accessories are cheaper.

According to the South African immigration agents, the woman was taken to Musina, the South African bordering town.

"Where emergency is needed we call in a Musina ambulance, and that is what we did," said a border immigration officer without giving any further details.

South Africa has become a shopping and business destination for many Zimbabweans, whose United States currency has given them better buying power than the previous unstable Zimbabwe dollar.

The incident comes months after a Gweru woman and another Beitbridge woman both gave birth to baby boys at the same border separately this year on their way from shopping in South Africa.
