A 24-year-old Tsholotsho woman, Elizabeth Gumbo, has been locked up in remand prison after she used another woman's birth certificate to acquire an identity card at the Bulawayo Registrar's offices.
Gumbo was not asked to plead to the unlawful possession and use of documents belonging to someone when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takundwa Witness Mtetwa on Monday.
The magistrate remanded her in custody today for trial.
The court heard that on May 7 last year, Gumbo unlawfully took possession of the birth certificate of the complainant Abigail Masuku. She used it to obtain a national identity card at the Bulawayo Registrar's offices situated at corner 10th Avenue and Hebert Chitepo Street.
Gumbo was issued identity card number 79-151045 T 39.
Masuku discovered the criminal act when she went to the registry offices and was told that someone had unlawfully used her birth certificate to obtain an identify card.
She reported the matter to the police and investigations made led to Gumbo's arrest.
