THE Rural Libraries and Resources Development Programme (RLRDP) is spreading its donkey drawn mobile library service from Nkayi to Gokwe South District.
The donkey drawn mobile library service provides rural children with textbooks as part of efforts to improve the pass rate at schools.
In a statement yesterday, RLRDP secretary-general Mr Obadiah Moyo said the donkey drawn mobile library has over the years been operating in Nkayi District.
"The library service has been operating at Tsheli High School in Nkayi, within a cluster of five schools namely Tsheli, Sovondo, Saziyabana, Gampinya Primary Schools and Hlanganani Secondary School.
"The expanded programme will now include Ndarire, Tachi and Kana Primary Schools as well as Kana High School in Gokwe South," said Mr Moyo.
He said RLRDP would provide Gokwe South with a refurbished donkey drawn mobile cart, which has a carrying capacity of 2 500 books.
"Books comprising Ndebele and Shona children story books and novels, English literature novels, sunrise readers, HIV and Aids material and general story books, revision text books for primary schools (Grade 7), general text books and teacher resource books will be donated at the launch by RLRDP," said Mr Moyo.
"The total cost of the books is $6 500 and were made available with the assistance of Save the Children and Book Aid International."
He said RLRDP would continue to provide training in basic skills of librarianship and more relevant books to the Nkayi and Gokwe South districts Mobile Libraries Network.
