An NRZ goods train heading towards Bulawayo from Dabuka hit an Isuzu truck at Kombo rail level crossing near Shangani yesterday morning killing three people on the spot.

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) public relations manager Mr Fanuel Masikati confirmed the accident.

"We regret that three people died on the spot when their vehicle, an Isuzu twin cab, was hit by a goods train at Kombo rail level crossing near Shangani.

"The vehicle had four passengers on board. The train, which was heading for Bulawayo, was coming from Dabuka," said Mr Masikati.

It could not be established where the surviving passenger was taken.

Mr Masikati said NRZ was concerned about the accidents at rail level crossings across the country and urged drivers to observe traffic regulations.

"NRZ is very concerned about the increasing accidents at rail level crossings. It is sad that drivers ignore road traffic regulations despite the fact that driving schools teach them to observe them.

"Drivers should always remember that they cannot win an argument against the train. They should not rush," said Mr Masikati.

He urged members of the public to avoid playing on the railway line and throwing themselves in front of oncoming trains.

"The rate of suicidal cases on the railway lines are also worrying. We urge members of the public to seek professional counselling when they have problems instead of committing suicide by throwing themselves in front of trains," said Mr Masikati.

Comment could not be obtained from the police.
