A BUNGWE High School teacher in Filabusi was fatally assaulted by another man when he was allegedly found being intimate with a Form Three pupil, police confirmed yesterday.
The incident occurred on Friday last week at about 10pm in Filabusi.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Butholezwe Mlalazi (33) who was employed as a teacher at Bungwe High School was caught by a veterinary services employee, Gideon Sibanda (28) while being intimate with a school pupil who resided at Sibanda's house. The pupil was aged 23.
"On 21 June at around 8am, Sibanda left home for work and when he returned at around 10pm, he went to the kitchen where the pupil sleeps, to fetch some water. Sibanda found Mlalazi sleeping in the kitchen with the pupil. Angered by the incident, Sibanda slapped the pupil once before he went on to assault Mlalazi with booted feet on his head," said Insp Ndebele.
Mlalazi who was still not dressed during the time of the assault did not retaliate as he struggled to dress up.
"Sibanda assaulted Mlalazi until he left him lying unconscious," said Insp Ndebele.
He said Sibanda was later taken to Gwatemba Clinic for treatment but was referred to Filabusi District Hospital as his condition was serious. Insp Ndebele said Mlalazi was later transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) but died three days later.
"His condition deteriorated and died at around 7am on 24 June as a result of serious internal head injuries," he said.
Insp Ndebele said Sibanda was arrested and is assisting the police with investigations. Sibanda is now facing a charge of murder.
Insp Ndebele urged members of the public to not to take the law into their hands and to desist from resorting to violence, but instead seek counselling or input of the police in resolving misunderstandings.
