A MBERENGWA woman is battling for life at Mnene Mission Hospital after her boyfriend allegedly severely assaulted her several times on the head with a stone after she had threatened to report him to police for raping her.
The woman (name withheld) has been admitted to hospital for almost two weeks and her condition is reported to have improved though it still remains critical.
Her boyfriend Energy Moyo (22), from Madhume village under Chief Mahlebadza in Mberengwa, has since been arrested and last week appeared in Mberengwa magistrate's court facing rape and attempted murder charges.
The magistrate, Mr Christopher Maturure, did not ask Moyo to plead and remanded him to 2 July before advising him to apply for bail at the high court.
The State led by Ms Wadzanai Shayanewako alleges that on 1 June this year the accused was walking with his girlfriend from a nearby business centre going to their homestead.
When the two approached a bushy area between two mountains, the court was told, Moyo made sexual advances towards the complainant but was turned down.
It alleged that Moyo, who could not stomach having his sexual advances turned down, violently forced himself on the complainant and had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent.
Ms Shayanewako further told the court that after the rape, the complainant threatened to report Moyo to the police for raping her, a threat Moyo would have none of.
In a bid to stop the complainant from reporting him and conceal his evil act, Moyo allegedly picked up a stone and used it to strike the complainant several times on the head until she fell to the ground bleeding.
The accused allegedly fled the scene leaving his victim for dead.
A passerby, who knew the complainant, found her lying unconscious on the ground and rushed her to Mnene Mission Hospital before alerting her parents who reported the matter to police.
Police investigations led to Moyo's arrest.
