A security detail employed by Minister of Mines Obert Mpofu was allegedly assaulted by fellow workmates for attending a ZAPU meeting in Lipinyu, Hwange, over the weekend.

Lifas Sibanda, employed by Obert Mpofu as a security guard at one of his properties located in one of the plush surbubs in the resort town of Victoria Falls was on Sunday allegedly assaulted by security officials who provide protection to Mpofu for attending a ZAPU meeting, Radio Dialogue reported.

A senior ZAPU official is said to have confirmed that one of their members was heavily assaulted by Obert Mpofu's bodyguards.

"It's true that one of our members, Lifas Sibanda, who works for Obert Mpofu as a security guard was assaulted by Mpofu's bodyguards after he attended a ZAPU meeting on Saturday in Hwange," said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official said Sibanda went to report the case at the Victoria Falls police station and was given a letter which he took to the hospital for treatment.

Obert Mpofu refused to comment on the allegations.

"Ask the guy who was assaulted and stop asking me these stupid questions, I don't like that," said Mpofu before terminating the telephone call.

Efforts to get a comment from the Matabeleland North Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Makonese was fruitless as she was said to be out office and her mobile phone was unreachable.
