PEOPLE of Matabeleland South have had a change of heart towards Zanu-PF as they allegedly voted for the party in all the 13 constituencies in the province.

Zanu-PF trounced its opponents in all the constituencies including those that had been held by MDC formations for more than a decade. The major casualties of the election included MDC-T National Chairman and former Speaker of Parliament Mr Lovemore Moyo (Matobo North), Mr Moses Mzila Ndlovu (Bulilima West), Mr Norman Mpofu (Bulilima East), Mr Siyabonga Malandu Ncube (Insiza South) and Mr Thandeko Zinti Mnkandla (Gwanda South).

Also affected was the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ms Nomalanga Khumalo in Umzingwane and Mr Edward Mkhosi in Mangwe.

Some of them have been MPs since 2000.

While Zanu-PF performed well in Matabeleland South, it lost all the 12 seats to MDC-T in Bulawayo. The party won seven seats in Matabeleland North, an improvement from the 2008 elections when it won four seats.

In an interview yesterday, Zanu-PF National Chairman Simon Khaya Moyo, who spearheaded the campaigns in Matabeleland South province, said he was impressed by the outcome.

"People in Matabeleland South have eloquently spoken. They have demonstrated that they are united. They also demonstrated their anger at the performance of the Inclusive Government," said Khaya Moyo who comes from Sanzukwi in Mangwe District.

Moyo said people had realised the mistake they made in 2008 when they voted for MDC formations.
He said by voting for Zanu-PF, the people of Matabeleland South had responded to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo's call for a united Zimbabwe.

"What is now important is for the people to work with the Government in implementing the Zanu-PF programme of action outlined in the party  manifesto."

Zanu-PF Matabeleland South provincial chairman Andrew Langa who won Insiza North said his party's victory was testimony of sound political leadership in the party.

"The people of Matabeleland South have realised that Zanu-PF led by President Mugabe is the only party committed to serving the people's interest," said Langa.

He said the revolutionary party had since 1980 been implementing people centred programmes.

"We are the only party that has built schools, colleges, universities, hospitals and other such public institutions. We gave people land and now we are implementing the indigenisation and empowerment programme," said Langa.

He paid tribute to the electorate for affirming their confidence in Zanu-PF.
"We have taken back what has always belonged to us in this province and credit goes to President Mugabe. Attendance at his star rally in Gwanda was a clear testimony that Zanu-PF was poised for a resounding victory," said Langa.

Obedingwa Mguni who won the Mangwe seat concurred, saying the Zanu-PF victory was a demonstration of the electorate's political maturity.
"This is a confirmation that our people now know which party represents their interests," said Mguni, a successful businessman, who all along was based in South Africa.

He said the people's message was loud and clear that they now wanted development in the province.
Mguni said the challenge to Zanu-PF and all those elected was to deliver on the promises.

"The responsibility now lies with us to work for the people. People liked our manifesto and are all agreed that our resources must be controlled by us. What is left is for us to deliver on the promises we made during the campaigns," he said.

Matabeleland South Governor Angeline Masuku also said the Zanu-PF victory was a big step towards meaningful development.

"I congratulate people of Matabeleland South for this victory which should enable the party and Government to spearhead development in this province. We are happy that people have realised that Zanu-PF is the only party that has brought about development in this country and the only party that will continue doing so.

People in this province have actually opened an avenue to development," she said.
Masuku said MDC candidates did not do anything for the people during their term of office.

She said Zanu-PF will be there to complete outstanding projects in the province and commended members of the provincial development committee, who worked with her in fostering development.

She also applauded the Gwanda Community Share Ownership Trust for changing the people's lives within a short period of time.
