UMGUZA District is set to benefit from fishery and irrigation vegetable gardening projects which are being spearheaded by HOCIC a non governmental organisation.

These projects are focusing on employment creation and income generation for sustainability of the community and encourage them to be independent. These will be done after the rehabilitation of dams is complete to make it easy to get water for irrigation. The programs director Ms Mzeche said "These projects will start after dams have been rehabilitated to support the irrigation scheme."

The rehabilitation of dams will help in making it easier to water the vegetable gardens and produce good products which will then be sold to other communities. It will make it possible to do fish farming, where they will farm the Tilapia species.

She said these programs will help in poverty alleviation in the district because the district is prone to drought hence these initiatives will help the community to sustain itself. "Most wards in Umguza district face perennial food and water shortages and villagers usual appeal to authorities to intervene."

Ms Mzeche said young people were going to benefit from the projects, "Everyone in the community including young people will benefit from the projects.

She said the projects are underway and they will be complete in November and be commissioned before the end of the year. "The work will be completed in November 2013 and commissioned December 2013." She also said the community was going to benefit from the dam and dip tank which will be constructed.

"The dip tank will benefit livestock from any member of the family and will improve the quality of livestock, which will fetch good money in the market"

She said these projects will go a long way in generating income for the community, about 12000 households who are closer to the project will benefit directly and those from surrounding areas who will get to buy the produce.

This will empower the community to be independent, instead of depending on donors. This will bring about development in the communities as they continue to grow these projects.
