A policeman in Zimbabwe died on the spot when he was hit by a speeding commuter omnibus at Esigodini Toll Plaza where he was on duty on Sunday.
Police identified the deceased as Constable Jefta Macherera (28) who was stationed at Gwanda Police Station.
He died after sustaining a fracture on both hip joints and chest injuries.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said the driver of the kombi, Zenzo Nkomo disembarked from the vehicle and fled into the darkness with two other passengers who were on board.
The vehicle reportedly had three passengers and one of them who was injured, remained at the scene after the accident.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said the kombi was coming from Bulawayo going towards Esigodini and it is suspected that it was speeding which resulted in Nkomo failing to stop and eventually losing control of it.
"We suspect that the driver was speeding and did not reduce speed when he approached the Plaza. He lost control of the vehicle which swerved from its lane to the central pillar of the Toll Plaza where Macherera was standing and rammed him onto a pillar.
"We have launched manhunt for Nkomo and the two passengers, anyone with information about their whereabouts can contact the nearest police station," said asst Insp Ngwenya.
