Workers at Bina Gold Mine in Gwanda were shell-shocked last Friday after they stumbled upon the remains of four people in a 25-metre deep shaft.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said the bodies were already decomposing when they were discovered.
"The mine shaft was last used by some Germans who used to own it long back. Operations only resumed last month," he said.
Chief Supt Nyathi said police were still carrying out investigations.
