A GWANDA police officer yesterday appeared in court for demanding a bribe from a suspect.
Elvis Babi (22), a Zimbabwe Republic Police officer stationed at Guyu Police Station in Gwanda District, was arraigned before
Gwanda magistrate Mr Arafat Kozanai facing charges of criminal abuse of office as a public officer.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to 20 September.
Allegations by the State are that on 14 August last month, the complainant, Mr Trust Mlilo (49), an employee at Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC), was brought to Guyu Police Station by two members of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee, Mr Zakaria Ngulube and Mr Dumisani Dube.
On arrival, the complainant was handed over to the accused.
Babi then told Mr Mlilo that he was facing a charge of assaulting Mr Dube on 12 August.
Mr Mlilo denied the charge saying that instead, it was him who was assaulted but Babi insisted on the charge.
It is alleged that Babi then told the complainant to pay a $20 deposit fine.
It is further alleged that Babi also ordered Mr Mlilo to pay $10 to Mr Dube, who he was said to have assaulted.
On 15 August, Mr Mlilo went back to the police station and allegedly gave the accused R100.
Babi allegedly pocketed the money and told Mr Mlilo to go back home.
When Mr Mlilo asked for the receipt for the payment made, Babi told him that he was free and the matter was over.
However, Mr Dube is said to have continued to demand the $10 from Mr Mlilo for the alleged assault as ordered by Babi.
As a result, on 26 August Mr Mlilo proceeded to Gwanda Police Station and made a report concerning the matter.
Investigations were carried out leading to Babi's arrest.
No money was recovered.
Mr Mncedisi Dube is representing the State.
