A 22-year-old man in Lower Gweru has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a High Court judge found him guilty of stoning his 17-year-old wife to death before dumping her body in a pit.

Delivering judgment, Justice Lawrence Kamocha said Mduduzi Nyathi of Gebuza Village under Chief Bunina was not suitable to be reintegrated into society after his brutal attack on the defenceless girl.

According to the court, Nyathi and his wife Melody Kapinga were on separation with the latter living at her parents' home. At about 5pm on June 28 last year, Kapinga went to fetch water at a nearby borehole in the company of two children aged four and five.

Unbeknown to her, Nyathi was following at a distance.

He later accosted Kapinga at the borehole, speaking about their marriage. A heated argument ensued, resulting in Nyathi force-marching Kapinga and the children to a nearby mountain.

He assaulted her with fists and also struck her with three stones in the head. Kapinga, who was by this time bleeding profusely, died on the spot.

Nyathi dragged the corpse to a pit where he dumped it. He then fled, leaving the two children behind.

In the meantime, Kapinga's relatives reported her and the two children missing.

Police later spotted Nyathi drinking beer at Lower Gweru Business Centre where he was arrested after confessing to the crime.

The arresting officers also noticed blood stains on his clothes while one of Kapinga's relatives found the children.

Mrs Rosa Takuva prosecuted.
