Police in Gokwe have arrested a 28-year-old man on allegations of fatally assaulting his girlfriend during a misunderstanding. Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest of Steven Mpofu of Chief Njelele.

He said Mpofu was arrested last Wednesday after his girlfriend Spiwe Maseko (29), of Mapfungautsi village, succumbed to injuries she sustained from being viciously attacked by her boyfriend.

"We are investigating a murder case in Gokwe where a 28-year-old man allegedly fatally assaulted his girlfriend following a misunderstanding.

"The suspect has been arrested and is assisting police with investigations," he said.

Insp Mahoko said on the said date, Mpofu went to visit Maseko at her homestead but what was supposed to be a romantic night turned nasty as the two had a heated dispute concerning their relationship.

"Mpofu and Maseko had a fight at the end of September on an unknown date. The now deceased Maseko sustained a deep cut on top of her left eye. However, she did not seek medical attention.

"It is alleged that Maseko was consistently complaining of terrible headaches since the day of assault. On Tuesday at around 2am, Maseko succumbed to the headache at her homestead in Mapfungautsi," he said.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Mpofu's arrest.
