Patient beats up another patient to death in Hospital

A suspected mentally challenged patient reportedly turned violent, broke handcuffs before beating up a nurse and fatally assaulting an 84-year-old patient who later died from the injuries.

The patients were admitted at the Filabusi District Hospital and the terrifying incident occurred last week. It is reported that the mentally challenged patient Sindiso Moyo (25) of Durban Ranch in Fort Rixon was admitted at the hospital where he ran amok and started assaulting other patients.

Moyo had been handcuffed to protect other patients and people around him but he allegedly broke the handcuffs and started beating up the nurse before turning to Arimando Siwela who failed to run away.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ngwenya confirmed the incident. he revealed that after breaking the handcuffs, Moyo went on to beat up a nurse, Jematias Mthandwa (20), and realising that his life was in danger the nurse fled for dear life.

"It was around 10pm when the accused person who was handcuffed became violent and broke the handcuffs. Moyo beat up a nurse and bit him on the right leg. When the nurse had escaped, he fatally assaulted another patient who was also admitted at the hospital," he said.

Moyo beat up the helpless man and he reportedly used an unknown sharp object and injured him on the right cheek and leg.

"As a result of the beating, Arimando sustained a broken jaw and a deep cut on the leg. realising the damage he had caused, Moyo escaped from the hospital leaving the old man in pain," Asst Insp Ngwenya added.

Arimando died around 4am on the following day and the matter was reported to the police. The cops launched a manhunt for Moyo and arrested him.

The body of the now deceased was ferried to Filabusi District Hospital mortuary where it was awaiting post mortem.
