A 20-year-old pregnant woman from Gokwe committed suicide by taking a pesticide after she was allegedly spurned by her boyfriend, police have confirmed.

The woman, Farai Ncube, had reportedly eloped to her lover, Patrick Mano, when she later committed suicide at the boyfriend's homestead.

The police spokesperson for Midlands, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Monday in Chigoronga village under Chief Nenyunga, Gokwe North.

Insp Mahoko said police were treating the matter as a sudden death incident.

"On the said date, the now deceased, Farai Ncube, decided to elope to her boyfriend's homestead after she discovered that she was pregnant.

"The alleged boyfriend, Patrick Mano, however, told her that he was not prepared to marry her. Ncube then allegedly took some pesticide and consumed it," he said.

Insp Mahoko said Ncube was rushed to Nenyunga Clinic and later transferred to Gokwe District Hospital but died on the way.

"The matter was reported to the police and no foul play is suspected. Her body is at the Gokwe District Hospital awaiting a post-mortem," he said.

The police spokesperson appealed to members of the public to seek advice from elders in the community when facing problems.

"They should also approach the local traditional leadership for counselling instead of taking away their lives," he said.
