ABOUT $58 000 was stolen from TM supermarket in Gweru when a group of unidentified men climbed through a window at around 2am and blew open the safe with explosives.

The burglars took away $58 000 from the safe before burning the smaller denominations. Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident but could not give further details.

TM Gweru branch manager, who declined to be named, said: "The vendors who were manning their vegetable market stalls said they heard a sound of an explosion coming from inside the shop and suspected it could be an electrical gadget that had encountered an electrical fault," he said.

He said the vendors alerted the police on patrol who also suspected an electrical fault.

It was only in the morning when he came to the office that he found out that a theft had indeed taken place.

"I only learnt of the burglary this morning when we discovered that the safe box was empty and some of the money was burnt.

"We then reported the matter to the police who attended the scene," he said.

The burglars are also suspected to have broken into many houses in Gweru where they either stole money or cleaned out apartments during the night in the past few days.

Many cases of robbery have been reported as the festive seasons kicks off.
