A policeman stationed in Victoria Falls was left nursing injuries when a suspect bit his hand as he attempted to escape from police cells.

The policeman only identified as Constable Chigubhu was on duty on 29 June this year when Prince Lubhayi (29) was shoved into the police station charge office after being arrested for a case of malicious damage to property.

Const Chigubhu was then assigned to escort Lubhayi of 1069 Chinotimba Township to the holding cells and on the way the suspect allegedly grabbed the policeman's left hand and sank his teeth into it - to make good his escape.

It is said that Chigubhu could not do anything to stop Lubhayi as he sustained a deep cut.

He was treated and discharged at Victoria Falls District Hospital for the injuries.

Lubhayi was, however, unlucky as other police officers gave chase and arrested him before he could leave the premises.

He is now facing a charge of attempting to escape from lawful custody and also assaulting a police officer.

Lubhayi, who is already serving a prison term for the case of malicious damage to property, has pleaded not guilty to attempting to escape from lawful custody and assaulting a police officer.

Victoria Falls resident magistrate Mrs Sharon Rosemani remanded him in custody to Tuesday and the case will be heard at the Hwange magistrates court where it has been transferred.
