Grade Two pupil run over by a haulage truck

THE community of Dete was recently plunged into mourning after a Grade Two pupil was run over by a haulage truck while attempting to cross the road on her way to school.
According to Matabeleland North acting police spokesperson, Sergeant Eglon Nkala, the incident happened on the 280km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway when a haulage truck approaching Cross Dete hit the pupil, killing her instantly.
"I can confirm that early last Tuesday morning a haulage truck travelling along the Bulawayo-Vic Falls road hit a Grade Two pupil aged 11 years.
"The victim, Sibongile Nyoni, who was in the company of other children tried to cross the road and was in the process hit by the truck and died on the spot," said Sgt Nkala.
A report was made to Hwange police who attended the scene.Sgt Nkala urged the public to ensure that children are escorted to school in cases where they have to cross a busy road in order to avoid such accidents.
"The public should make sure that they accompany their children to school especially in cases where they have to cross a busy road such as a highway. The observance of this will ensure that such incidents are minimised or don't occur altogether," he said.
