Woman ripped open her 11-day-old baby with a kitchen knife

A Gwanda women committed suicide by throwing herself into a flooded Dam. This was after she had gruesomely ripped open her 11 day old baby with a kitchen knife.
The Gwanda ZRP (Police) confirmed the murder that that took place in Selonga village, Gwanda district.
The provincial police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said the incident occurred at around 8pm at Selonga village in Guyu under Chief Marupi area.
"On the fateful day, the now deceased suspect, Unity Mlalazi, was with her baby in her room during which she picked up a knife and stabbed her infant on the abdomen leaving the intestines hanging outside and the baby died on the spot," he said.
Insp Dzirutwe said police were still investigating the case to ascertain the possible circumstances surrounding the incident.
Soon after committing the offence, the woman then wrapped the infant's body in a blanket and fled the scene.
"The offence came to light when the now deceased woman's four-year-old daughter discovered the baby lying unattended and she then alerted the elders.
"When the deceased woman's mother went to the room to collect the baby apparently thinking that it had been left unattended by its mother, she then discovered that it was dead with stab wounds in the abdomen," Insp Dzirutwe said.
A report was made to police who then teamed up with local villagers to conduct a search for the suspect leading to the discovery of her body floating in Selonga Dam on Tuesday morning.
Insp Dzirutwe said the bodies were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary. A local magistrate waived postmortems.
"As police we would like to urge people to seek counselling first in the event that they have social problems rather than resorting to such gruesome acts in which innocent lives are lost," he said.
