School circumcises pupils without parents knowledge

EMBAKWE High, a boys only school, allegedly allowed their pupils to be circumcised without the knowledge and authorisation of parents, Radio Dialogue reported.

This was discovered by parents whose children returned home from school with difficulties walking, as they were limping and upon questioning, the boys said were circumcised.

Fuming parents who spoke to Radio Dialogue said the school was out of line by sanctioning such a decision without their approval or knowledge.

Parents alleged this circumcision was carried out on December 2, where pupils from form one to three were the intended targets.

They said their children were having difficulty walking, whereas the school officials reportedly advised them to use salt on their wounds.

"What is more irking is our children were first tested for HIV without our knowledge, such a major decision like that took place in our children's lives and we didn't even know about it. The school authorities should explain to us why they did this without telling us," the parents complained.

It is alleged that some boys even hid at the Advanced level dormitories on the day in question, not wanting to be circumcised.
