MASVINGO provincial magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso's wife, Lydia Mudzongachiso, died days after she allegedly attempted to commit suicide over a domestic dispute with her husband involving $450.

Lydia whose age was not given died last Tuesday afternoon.

Her death comes after a failed suicide attempt last week in which she is said to have taken an unidentified poisonous substance.

Indications are that she could have failed to recover from the poisoning.

Efforts to get a comment from family members proved fruitless as they were unprepared to talk to the media.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident. He said Lydia attempted to commit suicide following a dispute with her husband over allegations of stealing $450 from him.

"I confirm the incident in which Lydia attempted to take her own life after having a domestic dispute with her husband. However, we have not yet received a report on her death," he said.

Residents who spoke to Sunday News said Lydia met her husband at OK Supermarket sometime last week where she wanted to collect money for grocery from him. The couple reportedly had a scuffle over $20 which Lydia had asked for from her husband leading to the wife snatching a wallet that had $450.

It is alleged that Mr Mudzongachiso went to report the matter to the police saying that Lydia had stolen his money and that led to her arrest and subsequent brief detention.

"She was detained at the police station for some hours and upon release Lydia who got incensed by the treatment went home and took a poisonous substance. She was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital where she received treatment and was discharged but her condition deteriorated and she died last Tuesday afternoon," said a neighbour.
