A 32-year-old Dete woman attacked and attempted to murder her husband's ex-wife with an axe after suspecting that the two were seeing each other behind her back.
Susan Mudenda of Rhodias Mupande's homestead at Kavhunikwa Village, Lubimbi in Dete was convicted on her own plea of guilty when she appeared before regional magistrate for Western Division, Mr Sikhumbuzo Nyathi facing a charge of attempted murder.
She was sentenced to six years in prison four of which were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Circumstances as presented by the prosecutor, Mr Felumusa Fuzane, are that on 29 December last year at around 10am, the complainant visited her former husband to show him his son. On arrival she found Mudenda at home but discovered that her former husband was away. When she introduced herself to Mudenda, she (Mudenda) got angry and ordered the complainant to go away and she complied. She then armed herself with a hoe and followed the complainant.
She caught her after a distance of about 10 kilometres and suddenly struck the complainant once on the head with a hoe and ran away. The matter was then reported to police leading to the accused's arrest. The complainant was referred to hospital for medical examination where a medical report was compiled and produced in court as evidence.
Asked why she committed the offence, Mudenda said she had warned the complainant to leave her husband on several occasions but she had been defiant. She told the court that she acted in a fit of rage following complainant's visit after she thought she was now in love with her husband again.
