Youths in Matabeleland North Province have hailed late Vice President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and President Mugabe for the role they played in bringing about unity in the country.

As the country prepares to commemorate 26 years of unity on Sunday, many are optimistic that the special day will be a time for the younger generations to learn and appreciate the sacrifices made by Nkomo and Mugabe for the benefit of the country.

Youths who spoke to the state controlled ZBC News said the initiative taken by the two leaders should be emulated by all as it is clear that they prioritised the wishes of the people ahead of individual ambitions, adding that it also brought peace and political stability in the country.

Hwange Rural District Council Vice Chairperson, Councillor Mathew Muleya said the signing of the Unity Accord not only paved way for peace, but led to social, political and economic development of the country.

The Unity Day came about after the signing of the Unity Accord by the PF Zapu leader, Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and the Zanu leader Robert Mugabe to form a united Zanu PF on the 22nd of December in 1987.

This year`s Unity Day commemorations will coincide with the commissioning of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, the unveiling of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo statue and the renaming of Main Street to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street in Bulawayo.
