The Xhosa community is seeking $20 million for the construction of a secondary school designed to empower locals with education skills while preserving the vanishing language.

Xhosa prince Macleod Tshawe tells VOA Studio 7 the government is fully backing the project as the new constitution recognizes Xhosa as among Zimbabwe's 16 official languages.

Tshawe says the school, which will provide lessons from Form One to Form Six, has also received support from Xhosa King Zwelonke.

"We are happy that we have received a lot of support from the Zimbabwe government and King Zwelonke. This project will go a long way in preserving our culture and empowering local people with good education," he says.
