Bubi Rural District Council has embarked on an awareness programme aimed at assisting its communities to construct their homes using strong material to avoid the risk of collapse during extreme weather conditions.

The council's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Patson Mlilo, said the programme involves educating local councilors, traditional leaders and villagers in all the 23 wards in the district to ensure that they construct their homes using high quality building material which will guarantee safety in the event of floods.

"We have noted that if we don't take the initiative and assist them when they are building it will be a challenge when the houses collapse because it will come back and affect us as well," he said.

He said the Council is making it mandatory that every household begins by constructing a toilet before the entire home to reduce the spread of diseases during this period.

Although Bubi also received heavy rains that were experienced in other parts of the country, no houses, lives or property has been lost during this period.

However other districts in Matabeleland North Province such as Hwange have already recorded a number of families whose huts collapsed due to excessive rains which hit the area recently.
